Michael Robert "Moose" Nelson

Michael Robert Nelson, affectionately referred to as “Moose,” 59, of Murrysville, PA, was taken suddenly to be with the Lord on Tuesday, February 24, 2026.

Big in stature, but always warm and kind, Michael was born December 27, 1966, and raised in Elliott, PA. He was a son of Janet (Schoeneman) and James Nelson.

Throughout his life, and in various roles, he spent time serving in the church. A lover of music my p, he was always ready for praise and worship. His faith in Jesus Christ was sometimes quiet, but always steady. He shared that faith in ways big and small.

Being a loving father to his three children was the pride of his existence. Lauren (McDonough, GA), Heidi (Statesboro, GA), and Michael (Slippery Rock, PA) were the light of his life.

Michael was always a hard worker, no matter the size or nature of the job. He enjoyed the open road in a rig, was a destroyer of pests, and skilled with a chainsaw, but he rarely spoke of many things with the same enthusiasm as he did when referencing his time doing elevator work. There was not an odd job he couldn’t conquer.

Moose had a love for adventure, be it land, air, or sea. He could regularly be found riding his Harley. His love of the water led him to become a Master Scuba Diver, and he could be seen skydiving in his 50s.

His legacy of kindness, humor, perseverance, and loyalty will be carried on by those who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be greatly missed and remembered forever.

He is survived by his loving fiancée, Laura May; children, Lauren M. Nelson, Heidi L. Nelson, and Michael R. Nelson II; and siblings, Janet (the late Flo) Zwitch and Jimmy Nelson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Janet (Schoeneman) and James Nelson, and his sister, Debbie Nelson. 

Friends received from 3 p.m. until time of Funeral Service at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 2nd at ANTHONY G. STAAB FUNERAL HOME, INC., 900 Chartiers Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15220. Interment will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, the family strongly suggests donations be made to the GoFundMe that has been set up for Michael’s family.
